Matcha Latte Recipe

I’m a very recent convert to matcha (and the matcha latte, which I’ll get to in a second), but converted I am. I like normal tea, but it’s not something I drink regularly. (I always have green tea and Throat Coat tea on hand, though, in case my throat gets scratchy or sore. They’re my go-tos.)

If you’re not familiar, matcha is powdered green tea. Because it’s concentrated (you’re consuming the actual ground-up leaves rather than just brewing the leaves), it has more of the antioxidants and other nutrients that make brewed green tea so beneficial. Just keep in mind: as with any food, it should be consumed in moderation. Too much of anything, even the really good things, isn’t good.

Which I have to remind myself of, because I started making matcha lattes and they are delicious.

This is my version of the matcha latte, and I’m loving it.

Matcha Latte

1 teaspoon matcha powder

1/2 cup coconut milk or chocolate almond milk (or any milk, really, but these are my faves)

1/2-3/4 cup soda water

dash of turmeric

ice

Put milk, match, turmeric, and ice in a shaker cup. Shake well, then add soda water. Enjoy!

I’ve tried several brands of matcha, including Nature’s Blueprint Organic Ceremonial Matcha and The Republic of Tea Matcha Powder, and there are many more out there to try. I’ve read that you want to be careful of the especially low-priced matchas. As with any super low-priced product, you may be getting a super low-quality product, too. When it comes to your health and what you’re consuming, you want to be a little more careful with that than you do, say, with a coloring book for your niece. 🙂

You can make warm matcha by putting 1/2 teaspoon in about 1/2 cup of hot (not boiling) water and whisking till blended. I’ve tried it. It’s a powerful green tea taste, and I prefer that with lemon and honey. You can also bake with the powder; I’ll be trying to make some kind of matcha granola or protein bar one of these days.
